Mark Permar

A planner and architect by training, Mark's passion is creating and implementing community design concepts. He works with clients to develop a vision for communities, neighborhoods, homes and businesses, to secure entitlements and to assist the development team in making it come alive. Mark also lends his exceptional visualization, planning and facilitation skills to the permar team's concept creation and refinement process.

Mark has extensive experience in strategic masterplanning, programming/design, concept development and the entitlement process – experience acquired through a broad range of development and consultant roles in both the public and private sectors.

The tenure of Mark's client relationships is testament to his creative energy and enthusiasm for collaboration. Mark's involvement in the development of Kiawah Island has spanned more than 30 years. He was employed by the Kiawah Island Company from 1979 to 1985, as Vice President of Planning and Design, and has worked as a consultant to Kiawah Partners since 1988 and Kiawah Island Resort since 2005. His involvement with the Chautauqua Institution began nearly 30 years ago.

His 40 plus years of real estate development experience have included positions as Development Services/Senior Planner for the Metropolitan Planning Commission, Savannah, Georgia, and Architect/Planner with the Urban Systems Development Corporation, a subsidiary of Westinghouse, in Washington, D. C. He has testified before United States Senate and House Committees regarding coastal development controls.

Mark is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, an architect and a member of the Urban Land Institute. He has served as a member of various design review boards and conservancy groups charged with the responsibility of balancing manmade and natural environments.
